Our history

  • 1949Established

    The Trafalgar Veterinary Centre was originally a one vet practice established in 1949 by Dr Wes Southgate.
  • 1979Branch Clinic at Newborough

    Dr Wes established a branch clinic to the Trafalgar Centre in Newborough in 1979 – the Newborough Veterinary Centre was initially located in Boolarra Avenue, Newborough. Wes was joined a few years later by partner Dr Peter Carter. Peter later went on to work for the CSIRO, leaving Wes to employ a series of associates.
  • February 1984Dr Peter McCourt purchased the Centre

    Dr Peter McCourt purchased the Centre and was joined.
  • Dr Gee Tawfik joined in 1990

    Dr Gee Tawfik joined in 1990 and became co-practice owner in '91.
    Following the addition of a new business partner, the Trafalgar Veterinary Centre expanded into a three vet practice and a series of new vets have come to work at the clinic: Drs Derek Harms, David Wilson, Andrew Lewis, Fiona Anderson and Catherine Fitzgerald.
  • 1997 Expansion

    The clientele base expanded further and together Drs Peter and Gee oversaw building expansions to the clinic. Commencing in 1997, the Trafalgar Veterinary Centre grew to accommodate an additional consulting and treatment room, a new chemical storage room, a larger and more modern waiting room and newer, larger kennel facilities.
  • 2004Relocation & Surgical service

    In 2004 the Newborough Veterinary Centre relocated to Monash Road in Newborough from its previous home on Boolarra Avenue. In February 2005 the Newborough branch extended its trading hours from 2 - 4pm to 9am - 4pm, allowing a surgical service to become available to our Newborough and Moe clients.
  • 2005Employed a fourth practicing vet

    In 2005 Trafalgar Veterinary Centre employed a fourth practicing vet, Dr Kerrie Piper. That same year saw the introduction of Trafalgar and Newborough Veterinary Centres’ Puppy School.
  • 2009Dr Jared Waddell-Smith

    Dr Fitzgerald’s departure to the UK in 2006 saw Dr Jessica Gillespie join the four vet team. Dr Gillespie has since moved away to undertake further study, with Dr Jared Waddell-Smith joining us in 2009.
Today the Trafalgar Veterinary Centre is open from 8.30am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, 7pm to 7.30pm Monday and Thursday nights and 10am to 12pm Saturdays. Our Newborough branch hours are from Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm with Puppy Preschool held most Tuesday nights from 6.30 to 7.30pm. The clinic still offers an after hour service for emergencies concerning any species with emergency consultations conducted from the Trafalgar Centre.
